New technologies help accelerate peace, justice and security worldwide. With the digital revolution in full swing we believe that modern technologies can have tremendous impact in terms of bringing peace, justice and security. But these technologies do not stand alone: they land in an existing context and have a massive impact on liveability. The emergence of smart cities even more emphasizes the importance of the legal and ethical frameworks surrounding the use of Artificial Intelligence. With AI as a disruptive technology that can both help us and harm us, we have to ask ourselves the question: What kind of society (or city) do we want to live in? How do we deal with the trust of citizens and employees, and how do we maintain this in the event of adoption? Topics that need to be addressed are transparency, accountability and explainability. The goal is to find answers to these questions so emerging technologies – like AI – can be embedded in existing structures with multi-stakeholder complexity and stimulate peace, justice and security.
